We Connect The Dots - Discovery Day @ Microsoft

 

Join We Connect The Dots on Friday March 31st, April 4th, and May 4th 2017 for a one-day FREE immersive learning experience at the Microsoft Office in Time Square, New York where we will explore STEAM education and careers, showcase new technologies for students and teachers, and introduce students to the vast and exciting environment of Microsoft and their community of professionals. This event is designed to provide students ages 13-18 years old  a valuable insight to the evolving world of 21st century workforce skills. Students will participate in exciting workshops designed by WCTD in partnership with Microsoft, hear important talks from real industry experts, and participate in some fun gameified learning experiences.

This program is by invitation only and a limited number of seats are available to schools in the NY metro area. To learn how your school can participate contact our Events Team at events@we-connect-the-dots.org. School officials that have received their invite and have a registration code may register their school below.  

The maximum number of students that a school can register is 25. 

Important INformation:

Registration opens at 8 AM. All students must be in registered by 8:30 AM. The program will run from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM sharp. Please plan transportation arrangements accordingly. 

The day's events will include:

  • An introduction to software tools and resources for students and teachers
  • Talks from industry experts and the Microsoft Community Team
  • A scavenger hunt inside our Yammer community
  • A tour of the Microsoft office and a look at different careers held by Microsoft employees
  • Team building and collaboration activites

Students must set up a Microsoft Live account and a Yammer account BEFORE the event. There will not be sufficient time to set up these accounts on the day of the event, and students will need both accounts to take part in the day's activities. Teachers should assist students in setting up these accounts and installing the Yammer application on their smartphone. In order to prepare for the program all students and teachers are required to take the Yammer Essentials Course located on Microsoft Academy Live here: Yammer Essentials Course

This course is approximately 30 minutes long.  It can be assigned as homework with a follow up class discussion to ensure every student understands how to utilize this collaboration tool. Doing this will ensure every student has a great experience during Discovery Day and understands how to stay connect within the community post the program.

To ensure teachers, and chaperones for the program have a clear understanding of the day we will hold two conference calls. One member from each school participating is required to attend one of these calls.  We have setup two times to help with scheduling and participation.

Transportation

Transportation to and from the event must be provided by the school. The Microsoft office is accessible by private and public transportation. There are garages nearby for those bringing private vehicles. Street parking is also available. Please observe all street and parking signs.

School Buses: School buses can access the building on 8th Ave. Buses should approach the building in the right-hand lane and drop kids off in front of the 8th Ave entrance just across from Port Authority. 

Subway: The Microsoft office is accessible by subway. From Penn Station take the A, C, or E line uptown to 42nd Street, Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Public Bus: The Microsoft office is located conveniently across the street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Exit the terminal at 8th Ave and cross the street to the Microsoft office.

What should students and CHAPERONS bring?

All attendees must pack a lunch, snack and beverage

Students should bring their smartphones to the event. They will be useful throughout the day's events. 

Students will not need to bring laptops or tablet devices. WCTD will provide Surface 3 devices for students to use during the event. 

All waivers and documents! Chaperons must present all documents at the security check-in before proceeding to the elevators. Those students who do not have their documents will be prohibited from the day's events. Waivers and registration documents will be provided in your confirmation email once you have registered your class.
